University of Exeter Shakespeare Performance Proposal
The MA/MFA Staging Shakespeare students at the University of Exeter have never been a group who shy away from a challenge. Our group of seven students bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise to our field.
Our mission is two-fold: We wish to establish a tradition of excellence in the arts for the village of Kastellos and we plan to continue the history and tradition of excellence the Rethymno Renaissance Festival. In order to accomplish this, we propose to produce two, full-length Shakespeare productions (Macbeth, Taming of the Shrew) for the cost of one production. By producing two well known and loved Shakespeare productions, we plan appeal to a broad audience, thereby helping to draw in audience members who may not otherwise attend our productions. Our performance schedule is also very flexible. We can perform both shows each night, one show each night, or simply one of the two choices we have listed here. Each show will use only our seven performers and will use minimal set pieces, reminiscent of a troupe of traveling players. Use of minimal sets and costumes, however, does not mean a sacrifice of quality. We hope that by minimising the initial up-front cost, that the village of Kastellos will be able to reap a profit for the continuation of future Shakespeare performances for the Rethymno Festival and its arts programmes in the village.
